  Purdy won Canada's highest literary honour, the Governor-General's Award, for The Cariboo Hunters () and later for the Collected Poems. He was a member of both the Order of Canada and of Ontario. Unable to contain myself any longer today I leapt from the supper table and went to pull from my shelves my favourite book of poetry: Beyond Remembering: The collected poems of Al Purdy. I’ve seen and heard Purdy read twice, and what I remember most was laughing, and wanting to kiss his cheek, and thinking him a dirty old but very sweet man.
